Black Urban Growers

black urban growers logoBlack Urban Growers (BUGS) is an organization of volunteers committed to building networks and community support for growers in both urban and rural settings. Through education and advocacy around food and farm issues, we nurture collective black leadership to ensure we have a seat at the table.

In November of 2009, Black Urban Growers began organizing and hosting a series of community events with the purpose of starting a conversation around food: Where does it come from? Who is providing it? Why don’t we see more black farmers at the farmers markets? What is the relationship between our individual health and the health of our communities, and why does it matter?

Rise & Root Farm :: We are strongly rooted in New York City and committed to engaging rural and urban communities through food and farming. Our current and previous farming related affiliations include: Just FoodFarm School NYCEcostation:NYBushwick Campus Farm, Black Urban Growers, Crock and JarLa Familia Verde Community Garden coalition.  We have worked with community gardens and urban farms in NYC and beyond, and we have dedicated our lives to increasing the number of people growing and eating good food. We care about justice and equity and in building a strong local food economy.

We came together with a common dream, to continue our food justice work by growing food and community beyond the city boundaries.  We believe we can accomplish more together than any one of us could do on our own.
