Residents in ‘neglected’ sections of 16 communities to get electricity
Several thousand households are expected to benefit from electricity for the first time in years as government moves to install electrical distribution networks in certain sections of 16 housing schemes across six Administrative Regions.

The beneficiary communities include: Onderneeming in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam); Lust-en-Rust, and Zeelugt in Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara); Farm, Covent Garden, Peter’s Hall, Eccles Industrial Park, Perseverance, Paradise, Enmore, Barnwell and Diamond Commercial/Industrial Area in Region Four (Demerara/Mahaica); Hope/Experiment and Balthyock in Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice); Kilcoy/Chesney, Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne); and Bartica in Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni)

According to the State Minister, Joseph Harmon, the previous administration – the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) – launched several housing initiatives where persons were encouraged to commence building their homes, however there was no necessary infrastructure to support the implementation of utilities.

GINA: Prime Minister Samuel Hinds in a statement to the National Assembly today, noted that the petition signed by Lethem residents to rescind the increase in electricity tariff was unconscionable.

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament, Sydney Allicock, presented the petition on behalf of the residents, calling on the Lethem Power Company Inc., (LMPCI) to immediately rescind its decision in relation to the increase in tariff. “It is an unconscionable act for the good citizens of Lethem to be coming here with a petition of this nature,” the Prime Minister said. He said that he can only assume that the residents have not taken time to look at the situation and have ignored the fact that all through the years government’s position has been one whereby it is advancing electrification through the hinterland by covering capital cost, but operational cost including maintenance are to be met by beneficiaries.
